Fostering Creativity in the Workplace

by Allan Peretz

The people within a company are the creative power that drives it forward. A workplace with free-flowing creativity is necessary for the success of a business. Because of this, it is important to take steps to encourage creativity within your business environment to keep up with our current age of technological advancement.

Although creativity is mostly attributed to being an inborn trait, it can be developed with a little help. Follow these tips in order to encourage your employees to strive for innovation in their work efforts.

Reward Creativity

In order to encourage your employees to think outside of the box, motivation can go a long way with rewards. This will help to ensure that nobody thinks taking time to be creative is a waste of their time or efforts.

In order to do this, set goals and offer rewards for those who meet them in a timely and creative manner. Rewards can be monetary or in the form of recognition.

Establish Teams

One systematic way to foster creativity in your workplace is to establish innovation teams. Assign each team a task of coming up with ideas on particular areas. Provide deadlines and reward those who worked with excellence. This shows your employees that your company places a particular emphasis on the value of creativity.

Implement Confidential Creative Avenues

Although more outspoken individuals may have no problem voicing their creativity to a crowd, some may be shy and suppress their good ideas as a result. Set out a suggestion box or request that individual emails with recommendations be sent to one person in the company in order to draw out creative juices from all personality types.

Brainstorming is an excellent means of bringing about creative ideas. Because of this, another option is setting up a private channel where anyone can share their ideas. Individuals can privately discuss their ideas with a level of anonymity.

Encourage a Positive Environment

Have fun at work. When everyone is serious creativity can be hindered. If the entire crew is stressed out or focused on monotonous tasks, creativity may be hindered. Studies have shown that a positive outlook can encourage creativity. Positive thinking helps to broaden our perspectives leading us to be more open-minded and more apt to exploring alternatives.

Be Supportive of Creativity

Employees are more likely to take risks and offer creative input if they are aware that the company they work for supports creativity. This is why it is important to ensure that your employees are in tune to your desire to hone a creative atmosphere at work. To do this, make sure you are receptive to ideas they present to you and make it known to everyone that creativity is valued. Be careful to not be critical of ideas that you do not like.

By encouraging creativity within your organization, you will see a positive change in not only the atmosphere in which you work but in the quality of work produced by employees.
